Let the bloodletting begin. The Giants announced today that they have released veteran LB Michael Boley.

From the Giants:

Boley joined the Giants as a free agent in 2009, after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

“Michael came in and learned our defense quickly and he added speed, coupled with big play ability, to our defensive unit,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “He also played an important role in helping us win Super Bowl XLVI. I wish him well as he moves forward in his career.”

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Boley, 30, who was due $4.25 million this season. It is believed the feam will realize that much in cap space by cutting him.

Boley saw his playing time at the WLB spot diminish during latter part of the season as the Giants employed different formations and utilized other personnel.

The Gianfs will continue to give more playing time to their younger corps of LBs: Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich and Jacquian Williams.
