Several teams will be looking into signing Osi Umenyiora this spring. In fact, there could be more than a few.

The goal for most teams is to average a minimum of two sacks per game on defense (32 sacks). Last season, the Giants were just above that with 33, but ten teams averaged two sacks or less:

Indianapolis (32), Washington (32), New Orleans (30), Jets (30), Philadelphia (30), Atlanta (29), Kansas City (27), Tampa Bay (27), Oakland (25) and Jacksonville (20).

But there could be others in the market for Osi’s services as well. Teams that just want to amp up their pass rushes could come knocking. One of those teams could be the Seattle Seahawks, who have coveted Osi for a few years now….

From Rotoworld: The Seattle Times says free agent DE Osi Umenyiora could be an option for the Seahawks…..Beat writer Danny O’Neil was told in 2011, coming out of the lockout, that Umenyiora was interested in going to Seattle to play, but the Seahawks didn’t want to give up the high draft pick to acquire him from the Giants at the time. O’Neil doesn’t expect the Seahawks to offer a lucrative long-term deal, but a fit is there. Seattle has already stated their desire for more pass rush help.

Here is what O’Neil wrote in the Seattle Times on April 25, 2012….

There were discussions about the Giants trading him last year after the lockout, and I’ve heard he was interested in the possibility of playing in Seattle.

Left unsaid at the time was what the Giants were willing to accept in return and whether Umenyiora would want a new contract as part of the transaction.

Well, a year later, we still don’t know what the Giants are willing to accept, but it seems like things might be lining up for a deal: Umenyiora told Tom Rock of Newsday he wouldn’t need to re-do his contract if traded.

This is significant. Umenyiora is at the end of his deal, scheduled to make a very reasonable $3.975 million in base salary in 2012. If he’s willing to play that contract out, he’s betting on his ability to have a big year and enter the free-agency market.

Umenyiora is 30, but remains a formidable pass rusher as evidenced by his nine sacks last season. He has had more than 10 sacks in three of the previous six years.
