Giants-Panthers: Sifting Through the Rubble
John Fennelly , Executive Editor
Well, this week the rubble is a good thing, caused by a planned explosion. The Giants ran all over the Carolina Panthers last night in a game that was never in question. The Giants drove 80 yards on 8 plays on the game’s opening possession and never looked back.
Eli Manning completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions for a passer rating of 110.2 to lead the Giants to a 36-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The Giants are 24-10 in Manning’s career when he has a 100+ passing rating.
Carolina was 0-10 coming into last night in games where Cam Newton threw a pick. Make that 0-11.
The Panthers turned the ball over five times. Newton threw three INTs and KR Joe Adams lost two fumbles – one on a kickoff and another on a punt. The Giants scored only 13 points off those turnovers, however. The Giants have forced a turnover in 34 of their last 36 games.
The victory was Tom Coughlin’s 76th as Giant head coach, moving him within one of Bill Parcells for second in franchise history. Steve Owen, who coached the Giants for 23 years in the early days of the NFL, is first with 153.
Lawrence Tynes’ five-FG performance was his best as a Giant. The last time the Giants had a PK hit five FGs was Oct.30, 2005 when Jay Feely booted five vs the Redskins.
All 46 players that dressed for the Giants got into the game. Yes, that includes DT Marvin Austin, who finally played in a game for the Blue. He was in on 17 snaps. Backup QB David Carr relieved Eli in the 4th quarter and took the final nine snaps. To answer your question: yes, he was sacked. Unbelievable.
Victor Cruz was relatively quiet (six catches, 42 yards) mainly due to the additional attention paid to him with Hakeem Nicks out. He was targeted only eight times, half the amount he had last week vs the Bucs. Ramses Barden was the main guy last night. He caught 9 of the 10 passes Eli threw his way.
The Giants’ ten longest plays each week is usually dominated by Cruz and Nicks. Last night, that list was littered with plays by Barden, TE Martellus Bennett and RB Andre Brown. Their longest play was a running play. No, really….
